The Holocaust Museum Yad Vashem ran a Guardian of Memory scheme in which one could request the name of a Shoah victim to remember. I received the name of Salka Windlfeuer, born 1917, murdered in Poland 1942. This quilt is a memorial to her life.
The style of the seven branched Menorah on it was inspired by graffiti of which looked very much like a Hannukah nine branched Menorah, found on the walls of Mostar following the Balkan war.
Whist the quilt names Salka, therefore and is overtly referencing her faith, it also has stitched into it thoughts of all who suffered in conflicts world over. The menorah in that context becomes an extended symbol of the power of light to ultimately prevail over darkness and a reminder that vast swathes of darkness can be rolled back by a gathering of people who individually only possess small powers.
